Instagram Cofounders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger have recently resigned from the social network powerhouse, which is currently housing 1 billion active users.

Before we dive in and talk about what's next for the Instagram platform, let's take a look at Systrom's and Krieger's statements:

"Mike and I are grateful for the last eight years at Instagram and six years with the Facebook team. We've grown from 13 people to over a thousand with offices around the world, all while building products used and loved by a community of over one billion. We're now ready for our next chapter.

We're planning on taking some time off to explore our curiosity and creativity again. Building new things requires that we step back, understand what inspires us and match that with what the world needs; that's what we plan to do.

We remain excited for the future of Instagram and Facebook in the coming years as we transition from leaders to two users in a billion. We look forward to watching what these innovative and extraordinary companies do next.

The duo, who founded Instagram in 2010 and sold it to Facebook in 2012 for $1 billion, told Facebook executives last week that they were departing from the company they built.

The co-founders have disagreed with Zuckerberg on a handful of recent product changes, including changes to comments and how posts are shared between the two networks.

Systrom and Krieger’s oddly-timed departure presumably means Instagram will be run primarily by Facebook executives, though Facebook’s influence over Instagram has started to increase in the past year, according to sources.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, in a statement, said:

“Kevin and Mike are extraordinary product leaders and Instagram reflects their combined creative talents. I’ve learned a lot working with them for the past six years and have really enjoyed it. I wish them all the best and I’m looking forward to seeing what they build next.”

After all has been settled, Instagram now has a new boss: Adam Mosseri, a 10-year veteran of Instagram parent company Facebook Inc.

Prior to his new job, Mosseri had served as Instagram’s head of product since May 2018. Joining Facebook in 2008, Mosseri started out as a designer and rose to lead the social network's news feed group.

What's next for Instagram?

A few things:

  • Speculation of a more-limited API access for third-party users.

  • Stricter restrictions on the amount of actions a user can do per hour (like, comment, follow, unfollow)

  • Changes to your Instagram grid layout in early 2019

These are just a few key points that we have discovered and these points aren't 100% confirmed yet.

There are changes that also happen that aren't reported to the public, so if we find important or interesting changes, you'll be the first to know!

Questions:
What do you think about the recent change of leadership?
How will it effect users in future updates?
